Born into an artistic family in New Jersey, Frederick Judd Waugh was the son of Philadelphia portraitist Samuel Waugh and miniature painter Mary Eliza Young. As a young man, he studied with Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and with Adolphe-William Bouguereau at the Académie Julian in Paris. After completing his studies, Waugh traveled to England, where he spent almost fifteen years developing the maritime subjects that established his reputation. On his return to the United States, Waugh continued to receive national recognition for his work, including five consecutive Popular Prizes at the Carnegie International.
