Agnes Martin

Agnes Martin was born in Macklin, Saskatchewan, Canada and grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942 and a Master of Arts degree in 1952 from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, while intermittently living in New Mexico. In 1957 she returned to New York and had her first solo exhibition the following year at the Betty Parsons Gallery. In 1967 she returned to the Southwest and lived and worked in Taos, New Mexico, until her death. In 1992 the Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of her work. Martin was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1997, and received the National Endowment for the Arts’ Nation Medal of Arts in 1988. In 1997 the Agnes Martin Gallery at the Harwood Museum of Art at the University of New Mexico, Taos was established.
