New York-based artist Pablo Barba combines classical traditions of figurative painting with themes drawn from contemporary digital culture. Born in Chile, he brings an art-historical lens to his triptych Valor, Purity, Justice (Old Glory), which reinterprets the centuries-old European tradition of personifying abstract virtues, codified by Cesare Ripa’s Iconologia (1593), through the symbolism of the American flag. In Barba’s work, each figure embodies a virtue associated with the colors of the flag: red for valor, white for purity, and blue for justice.
