Chatcha Thavee’s practice is marked by a rainbow palette and a highly rigorous process, an approach she considers to be calming. For her, each painting represents its own conversation with the canvas, their subtle transitions evoking a musical sequence, or by extension a walking stride. Starting with a sketch, every dot, line and brushstroke she applies slowly forms individual shapes. In turn, the canvas responds by bringing these shapes, colors, and lines to life. And though the end results may appear simple and her stories sad at times, she intends her works to be a beautiful escape for the viewer.
Thavee taught art and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1993 at Parsons School of Art and Design, New York City with further studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, and Chiang Mai University. She currently has her studio in Chiang Mai. Recent solo exhibitions include The Meeting Room Art Gallery (2020), Suvannabhumi Gallery (2019), and the Vichit Studio Gallery (2016), all in Chiang Mai; and VS Gallery, Bangkok (2023).
