Brendan Murphy is a Florida-based artist working in sculpture and painting, blending abstract and figurative forms. A former professional basketball player and Wall Street trader, he turned to art after September 11, 2001, teaching himself the craft with guidance from Eric Fischl, David Salle, and Ross Bleckner. He is known for densely inscribed “chalkboard” paintings covered in mathematical formulas and symbols, as well as his recurring Boonji Spaceman sculptures. His 22-foot chrome sculpture, Serve the Flag depicts a striding, forward-facing figure whose reflective surface mirrors the people and space around it.
