Luis Romero

Constructed in layers of paper, Luis Romero’s drawings present an active, open surface and suggest an area that is not visible. Much of his work is created through oppositions and cancellations–presence and absence, showing and hiding, physicality and illusion, systems and chance, openness and closure. The artist seeks to create an ambivalent space while making evident that his drawings are made by hand. The works can be seen as handmade Op Art, haptic architecture, fetishes, or toys.

Romero has participated in exhibitions at Adams and Ollman Gallery in Portland, The Franklin in Chicago, Threewalls in Chicago, and The Drawing Center in New York, among others.
