Lyle Owerko is a Los Angeles-based photographer and filmmaker whose work moves between pop culture and journalism, with a recurring focus on music and urban life. His “Boombox Project,” begun in 2005, documents vintage portable stereos as both a cultural record and a visual love letter to New York. Owerko’s large-scale photographs of boomboxes capture their role in contemporary music history, from hip-hop and punk to new wave. Abrams Image published a book of the series in 2010, with a foreword by Spike Lee.
