Raised in the Indigenous Chakma community in Bangladesh, Kanak Chanpa Chakma uses painting to explore identity, belonging, and place through vivid depictions of Chakma customs, daily life, and the rural landscape of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. She uses fluid brushstrokes to blend tradition with modern expression, drawing inspiration from the work of post-impressionist artist Paul Gauguin, particularly in his experimental use of color and synthetist style.
Chanpa earned both Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in drawing and painting from the Faculty of Fine Art at the University of Dhaka. Following her studies, she received the American Alliance Fellowship from Pennsylvania State University and in 2023 she received the Ekushey Padak, Bangladesh’s second-highest civilian award in recognition of her contributions to fine art.
