Lydia Rubio is an established artist whose multi-disciplinary works are distinguished by the use of words with images, multi-paneled paintings, and architecturally integrated installations.
Ms. Rubio’s paintings are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts of Indiana University, Stanford University Library, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, University of Southern California at Los Angeles, Wolfsonian FIU, Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Miami-Dade Community College, Lowe Art Museum, Cuban Heritage Collection of the University of Miami, Frost Art Museum, the Cintas Collection, Bryn Mawr College, and Lehigh University Art Galleries, and important private collections in New York, Miami, and Europe.
Lydia Rubio has exhibited her works in 27 solo and 70 group shows across the nation. She has shown in Bogota Colombia at LaLocalidad, Montreal with Beaux Arts Des Ameriques; in South Florida with Cremata Gallery, Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, Gloria Luria Gallery, Bianca Lanza Gallery, and The Americas Collection; and with Bridgewater Lustberg and Joyce Goldstein in New York City.
Ms. Rubio has completed several public art commissions: In 2011 “The Gate of Air” a stainless steel large-scale spiral shell sculpture and floor design and in 2008, “The Gate of Earth,” a monumental tree sculpture and terrazzo design, both at the Raleigh-Durham Airport in North Carolina. In 2009, she completed “The Women’s Park Art Gates and Fences,” a public art commission for Dade County Art in Public Places. In 2001 she installed “All night long, we heard birds passing” for Miami Dade County Art in Public Places at the Port of Miami.
She is a recipient of the Creative Capital Professional Development Fellowship, Pollock Krasner Fellowship, the State of Florida Individual Artist Fellowship in Painting, the Cintas Fellowship, and a Graham Foundation Award.
Ms. Rubio has a Masters of Architecture from Harvard University’s School of Design and a Bachelors degree in Architecture from the University of Florida. She has taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Parsons School of Design, and the University of Puerto Rico. An American artist born in Cuba, Ms. Rubio has traveled extensively in Europe and Latin America and lived in Puerto Rico, Florence, Boston, New York, Miami, and most recently in Bogota, Colombia.
