Karen Fitzgerald makes art out of everday things and shares her process in a studio open to the public at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia.
While she made art of all kinds growing up and throughout college, she studied physics and writing, and taught high school math and science in Kenya in 2001. Her career as an artist came together when she began working with materials from her everyday life and fell in love with the potential this path revealed.
Fitzgerald exhibits frequently through the US and internationally and was selected to take part in the Artists Studios residency program in 2016. Her work was also chosen for inclusion in the permanent collection of Purdue Galleries and profiled in 40 Years of Art and Community, highlighting artists at the Torpedo Factory where her art project For We Rise Against the Wind was showcased in 2018. In 2021, Fitzgerald was one of fifteen artists honored by the state of Maryland for notable artistic achievement.
