Julian Martinez

Julian Martinez, also known as Pocano, was a Tewa Indian, painter, and potter who lived most of his life in New Mexico. Martinez was instrumental in reviving the San Ildefonso and Santa Clara blackware pottery traditions and his family is credited with inventing a glaze technique that allows some areas of a pottery piece of have a matte finish, while others are glossy jet black. He was also a painter, specializing in figurative Westerns set against a blank background.
