My first works were landscapes but I was compelled by the Abstract Expressionists, particularly DeKooning, Kline and Joan Mitchell. I was drawn to their use of color, how they used black, the scale of their paintings, the freedom of their brushstrokes. There seemed to be no need to look outside for what one painted but rather inside. I stopped painting landscapes.
