Cara Romero

Contemporary photographer Cara Romero strives to create dynamic portraits of Native American life, challenging long-held stereotypes with complexity, vitality, and playfulness. Historically, anthropologists used photography as a tool to categorize, commodify, or dehumanize Native Peoples. Romero seeks to upend that dynamic, explaining, “When we as Native People explore new artistic tools and techniques, such as photography, we indigenize those media.”
